Sometimes, we search for the meaning of life and what our purpose truly is. It's not something that we have to search for though. It's something that we discover. It is something that finds us. There's so many quotes and what people refer to as "words to live by."
I'm sure that many beautiful, meaningful quotes have found you in your life. There are quotes I've read and felt that I love, too. Of all of them, these words speak the most to me. These words mean the most to me. These are the words I feel the most. These are words I want to live by.
Angelina Jolie received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 2013 Governors Awards. In her acceptance speech, she said that her mother was very clear that nothing would mean anything if she didn't live a life of use to others.
That. Right there. These words: Nothing would mean anything if I didn't live a life of use to others.
This is probably why I feel everything. This is probably why I believe that empathy is one of the most important things, ever. These words say it all. It makes so much sense. All of it does.
These words tell how I want to live my life, how I want to show up in the world, and what I want to do with my life.
Even in death, I want to be of use to others through being an organ and tissue donor. I think about that from time to time. I would never want to be buried or cremated if my organs and tissue can be used by someone else or others.
So, I constantly imagine and think of what I can do while alive being of use to others. It’s immense.
Everything that I create, I want it all to be of use to others. The things that I do in my life, I want it all to be of use to others. I want myself to be of use to others.
I have Angelina Jolie’s acceptance speech for the Governors Award in 2013 for her humanitarianism saved to my favorites on YouTube. If you want to see it, you can watch the video here.
I can't read these words without crying, and I'll never forget the first time I watched this acceptance speech, listening to Angelina Jolie's words that her mother gave her long ago. I wrote it down to keep forever.
These words gave me so much clarity and still do. Recently, I've been feeling these words even more and even stronger than I had before. I intend to live my life and dedicate my life to being of use to others in this world.
When the words for you to live by find you, you'll know. Embrace them. Live them. Take them seriously. It is your soul communicating with you in whatever way you receive your words to live by. You're here for a reason.
Love,
Jessica
