I think it's important to challenge yourself. It's one of the ways that you can definitely learn and grow. Yesterday, I wrote a poem for my son, and I think it's the first time I ever have written a poem. I love to read poetry, so I've started thinking of writing it myself.
To challenge myself, and to get practice while staying consistent with it, I want to write a poem every single day for at least a year. Since yesterday was the first day, today is the second day.
I'm not going to have a list of topics I want to write poems about. I'm just going to think of it as the day comes. Whatever is on my mind, whatever comes out through the pen onto the paper, is what it will be. I want to share them, but I'm probably not going to share every single one of them because that would be every day. I will though, eventually, here and there.
Along with that, I have been thinking about drawing something every day, too. I don't know if I'm going to end up putting these into collections later on and sharing every single bit of it all or not, but I know that I'm going to be writing a poem and drawing something (not related to the poem) every day.
Challenges, big or small, can be done every day — especially if it's smaller things. It's fun to think about something that you would want to have practice with, someone that you want to build a habit of and stay consistent with, and something that you want to learn about or improve on.
I think about what other things can be done every day for people who want to immerse themselves in something and do things more.
For artists: Taking pictures every day is good for photographers to do. Painting every day is beneficial for visual artists who paint. Writing a song every day can help song writers. Writing a poem every day can help poets to improve. Filming a video every day can get filmmakers to hone their craft more.
For anyone: Taking walks every day, whether it's outdoors or walking on a walking pad or a treadmill indoors, listening to a song every day, reading every day, and listening to a podcast episode every day are all things that the majority of people can do.
There are so many other things for both. These are just what come to my mind right now. This everyday challenge can be just for fun or it can be something that you really want to work on + improve.
I think about things that I love and want more of in my life. One of those things is classical music. I want to continue to listen to it every day. I also want to and need to learn Spanish and Catalan. I can work on that every day. Reading non-fiction, and especially fiction, is something that I intend to do daily, too.
Acting is what I want to do more than anything. So, there are things I can to to hone in on the craft more every day. I want to learn how to play the piano and compose. I don't have a piano at the moment, but I could still watch videos, look at the actual music, learn about composing, how to read the music, and learn more about piano.
You see, it's a good idea to organize this into two different groups: one that you want to do just for fun + want to have more of in your life and the other one that you actually want to do professionally and improve.
I am setting this up for myself. Every day, I will write a poem. I will draw every day. Other things that I'm serious about are acting, piano, learning Spanish, reading, and watching films. Those are the things that I really want to learn, immerse myself in, and improve while building a consistent practice for them all.
Imagine how much better, more enriching, and fun your life can be if you intentionally do things that you want more of in your life, improve these, get consistent with them, and actually learn more about it all daily.
What would these things be for you that you can challenge yourself to do every day?
It's also important to remember to not ever rush anything. If you're serious about something, you have to do it with care.
You put your heart into it. You put your soul into it. You put your personality into it. You are passionate about something — even if it's just one thing. You don't rush it. You create. It will come out. Do this for yourself first.
Love,
Jessica
